Homes for Sale in Whitestone
This North Queens community was named for a rock at the point where the tides meet from the East River and Long Island Sound.  It is just to the Northeast of Flushing.   The town of Clintonville was merged with it.

The Queens Borough President's page has a map which shows Queens neighborhoods.  While the boundary structures are not named, we'll take this as authoritative.  So, our best guess of Whitestone's boundaries from this map are:

  • North by the East River
  • East by the Clearview Expressway
  • South by 29th Avenue and Whitestone Expressway
  • West by the Whitestone Expressway

However, that would seem to eliminate at least one other neighborhood, Beechhurst.

The zip code that covers Whitestone is 11357.

It boomed after construction of a stamping mill in 1854

In 1860, Whitestone was a village in the Town of Flushing, located on the sound, in the extreme north part of town.  It contained 2 churches and an extensive tin and sheet ironware manufactory.  Population was 630.

In the late nineteenth century, many wealthy New Yorkers began building mansions in the area, on what had once been farmland. Rapid development of the area ensued in the 1920s, however, as trolley and Long Island Rail Road train service on the Whitestone & Westchester Branch was expanded into the neighborhood. Although this rail service ended during the Great Depression, the right-of-way was later used by Robert Moses to help construct the Belt Parkway, which includes the Cross Island Parkway which runs through Whitestone.

Further development came with the building of the Bronx Whitestone Bridge in 1939. Today, Whitestone is a largely working and middle-class neighborhood. The neighborhood comprises mostly of single family homes, garden apartment complexes, and small apartment buildings.

This largely residential northeast Queens community has a three-mile shoreline stretching from the Throgs Neck Bridge to west of the Whitestone Bridge. Within it are the separate enclaves of Malba, Malba Gardens, Whitestone, Whitestone Woods, Beechhurst and Robinswood, each with its own characteristics. Stately homes predominate in Malba, the most westerly section. The centrally situated Whitestone has most of the shopping; Beechhurst, to the east, has apartment towers along its shorefront.

The older three- and four-bedroom colonials, Tudors and ranches on 40-foot by 100-foot lots typical throughout Whitestone are increasingly being joined by new brick houses that are either replacing existing homes or being built on parcels that have been subdivided from an oversized lot.

The closest subway and Long Island Rail Road stations are on Main Street in Flushing, a 15-minute bus ride away. But many residents feel that this ''inconvenience'' helps give the community its privacy and suburban character.

''Town'' is the bustling three-block stretch of 150th Street north of the Cross Island Parkway that forms Whitestone's commercial heart. Here along with several restaurants can be found the florist, the bakery, the shoe-repair store, the barbershop, the deli and other shops that many main streets have lost. The ''town's'' offerings are supplemented by two major shopping centers, the Whitestone Mall on 153d Street and the Waldbaum's Shopping Plaza on 154th Street, which offer ample -- and unmetered -- parking.

Whitestone's reputation for good schools, convenient shopping and attractive residential streets has made its single-family residences costly, but reasonably priced co-op apartments fill the gap for those unable to afford a house.

For single-family homes, prices start at $200,000 for attached two- or three-bedroom houses. For a detached house in the Whitestone section, prices range from $250,000 to $300,000 for a four-bedroom Cape Cod, with four-bedroom colonials, Tudors and ranches priced from $330,000 to $350,000.

Whitestone, first settled by the Matinecock Indians and later attracting English settlers moving down from New England, had its share of notable residents.  The most prominent was Francis Lewis, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Another was Samuel Leggett, a wealthy Quaker, who in 1840 built the community's first school. Walt Whitman taught there from 1841 to 1843.

Today's children may attend one of four k-6 public elementary schools, P.S. 193, 184, 209, and 79 and one of two junior high schools, 185 and 194. Thereafter, they can continue on to either Bayside or Flushing High Schools. Bayside has three magnet programs, one in music, another in fine arts, and a third in math and science. Flushing has a magnet program in law.

Private schools include among others the k-8 Immanuel Lutheran School, the Roman Catholic pre-kindergarten-to-grade 8 St. Luke's School, and the nonsectarian Whitestone Academy, covering grades 7 to 12.

Francis Lewis Park provides the only real public access to the waterfront. But boat owners can dock at one of two marinas on Powell's Cove Boulevard, the Whitestone Marina & Water Sports Center at 150th Street and the Beechhurst Yacht Club on 154th Street.

Notable Community land marks include St. Lukes Church and the DG athletic league.
